2 00 5 A high power liquid hydrogen target for the Mainz A 4 parity violation experiment

چکیده
We present a new powerful liquid hydrogen target developed for the precise study of parity violating electron scattering on hydrogen and deuterium. This target has been designed to have minimal target density fluctuations under the heat load of a 20μA CW 854.3 MeV electron beam without rastering the electron beam. The target cell has a wide aperture for scattered electrons and is axially symmetric around the beam axis. The construction is optimized to intensify heat exchange by a transverse turbulent mixing in the hydrogen stream, which is directed along the electron beam. The target is constructed as a closed loop circulating system cooled by a helium refrigerator. It is operated by a tangential mechanical pump with an optional natural convection mode. The cooling system supports up to 250 watts of the beam heating removal. Deeply subcooled liquid hydrogen is used for keeping the in-beam temperature below the boiling point. The target density fluctuations are found to be at the level 10−3 at a beam current of 20 μA.

2 00 5 A luminosity monitor for the A 4 parity violation experiment at MAMI
A water Cherenkov luminosity monitor system with associated electronics has been developed for the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI. The detector system measures the luminosity of the hydrogen target hit by the MAMI electron beam and monitors the stability of the liquid hydrogen target. Both is required for the precise study of the count rate asymmetries in the scattering of longitudinall...
متن کاملA High Power Liquid Hydrogen Target for Parity Violation Experiments
Parity-violating electron scattering measurements on hydrogen and deuterium, such as those underway at the Bates and CEBAF laboratories, require luminosities exceeding 1038cm−2s−1, resulting in large beam power deposition into cryogenic liquid. Such targets must be able to absorb 500 watts or more with minimal change in target density. A 40 cm long liquid hydrogen target, designed to absorb 500...

A cryogenic horizontal single loop target has been designed, built, tested and operated for the G0 experiment in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The target cell is 20 cm long, the loop volume is 6.5 l and the target operates with the cryogenic pump fully immersed in the fluid. The target has been designed to operate at 30 Hz rotational pump speed with either liquid hydrogen or liquid deuterium. The hi...

SLAC E-158 is making the first measurement of parity violation in Møller scattering. E-158 measures the right-left cross-section asymmetry, ALR, in the scattering of a 45-GeV polarized electron beam off unpolarized electrons in a liquid hydrogen target. E-158 plans to measure the expected Standard Model asymmetry of ∼ 10 to an accuracy of better than 10. This paper discusses the performance of ...

The study of parity-violation in semi-leptonic processes has yielded important insights into the structure of the Standard Model and the substructure of the nucleon. I discuss the future of semi-leptonic parity-violation and the role it might play in uncovering physics beyond the Standard Model. In addition to celebrating the silver anniversary this year of electron scattering at the MIT-Bates ...
